Immortals' Requiem: An Epic Grimdark Fantasy by Vincent Bobbe (2018)

There are beings that live a shadow's breadth from our reality...

They are the dreams and nightmares of humanity, the ancient seeds of fairy-tale and superstition. These are the Immortals, creatures of magic that should live forever... and they are fading.
When a horror two thousand years dead returns to contemporary England, creatures long thought lost to myth and legend collide in a scramble for survival that could tumble civilisation back into the dark ages of blood and death.
Immortals’ Requiem is a Tolkienesque grimdark fantasy based in both a modern day city and vast supernatural worlds. If you like the idea of a drunken elf with a shotgun, an ancient warrior with a chainsaw and a whole host of violent supernatural beings you’ll love this gritty Amazon Number 1 Bestseller.

Overview
Immortals' Requiem is categorized as Grimdark Fantasy: Speculative fiction that is amoral, violent and anti-Tolkien. The book contains gory battles, witty humour and a drunken elf with a shotgun!
The story is a fast paced gritty adventure with larger-than-life characters and spans several worlds. Though there has been a recent trend within the dark fantasy genre towards young adult fiction, Immortals’ Requiem is written for adult audiences (due to scenes of violence, NOT erotica! The FAE in this book are not honourable, amiable or romanticised).
Read if you enjoy other books in this genre like Glen Cook's The Black Company and George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, or love works by Michael Moorcock, Joe Abercrombie, Steven Erikson, Mark Lawrence, Scott Lynch, Richard K. Morgan, Joss Whedon etc.
Please note, this book is written in the 3rd person from the point of view of various different characters. If your preference is for stories that follow a single character on their adventure then you might want to pass. However, if you are comfortable with multiple character timelines running in parallel that clash together with huge momentum and massive bloody collateral damage... then you are in the right place!

Content Advisory: This book is a dark fantasy intended for mature audiences and at times contains graphic violence and elements of horror.

Review

Immortal's Requiem is a good book to pick up this autumn and with Halloween around the corner it will be sure to tick the 'horror' box synonymous with the season.

This isn't my usual preferred genre and it did take me a little while to get into the story. However, I did find it dark and entertaining with lots of gore and violence.

At 554 pages it is quite a lengthy read but fans of the genre will undoubtedly devour it in no time.
